General summary/purpose:

We are recruiting a Project Director for the Cochrane Eyes and Vision (CEV)@United States. The mission of the CEV@US Project is to build a critical mass of evidence-based eyes and vision healthcare providers and researchers. Our main goal is to support authors with preparing and completing systematic reviews, to be published in The Cochrane Library and other journals.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

The Project Director, working closely with the Principal Investigator, will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination and implementation of the project as a whole. The specific tasks include: 

  • Lead the effort to recruit US-based ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other vision researchers to produce systematic reviews and coordinate their activities;
  • Liaison with CEV@US partners, including professional societies, non-academic and academic medical groups, consumer and patient organizations, journals, and other stakeholders;
  • Identify targeted areas where evidence is needed to answer important as yet unresolved clinical questions in eyes and vision;
  • Provide methodological support for the production of systematic reviews of interventions to prevent and treat eye disease and visual impairment;
  • Monitor review quality, supervise peer review and editorial processes;
  • Communicate with other CEV staff in the United Kingdom and Italy;
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest Cochrane methodology and policies;
  • Supervise methodologists and research assistants;
  • Take primary responsibility in tracking project timelines and deliverables;
  • Organize, contribute content to, and actively participate in educational offerings on the use and production of systematic reviews;
  • Organize staff meetings;
  • Organize communication and dissemination activities;
  • Present project findings at internal and external meetings and at conferences;
  • Monitor study budget and prepare progress reports;
  • Contribute to methodological research and manuscript writing activities conducted by CEV&US.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology or other health related field. Typically require PhD.  
  • One year related experience.
  • Require highly specialized advanced knowledge, education and/or training in a specialized field of study to conduct research.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Two years of experience related to the preparation and interpretation of systematic reviews; extensive experience in project coordination and management.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple priorities and concurrent projects;
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Keen attention to details;
  • Ability to work independently and exercise initiative and independent judgement; 
  • Ability to direct, motivate, and lead;
  • Accountable and respect timelines.

This position requires a high degree of independent action, including corresponding with systematic review authors and adhering to strict time lines. This is not an entry level position; not a statistical analyst position; or a lab scientist position. A successful candidate will be expected to operate independently with guidance provided by the Principal Investigator.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

  • Familiarity with a variety of software applications including word processing, graphing, statistical, presentation and reference management software an absolute requirement.

Supervisory responsibility:

  • Two (2) staff methodologists.
  • Three (3) graduate research assistants

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
