An opportunity is available for a Research Associate to work on the earthquake response of masonry structures in Malawi as part of a larger project on seismic resilience in East Africa.
The successful candidate will work on the EPSRC Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) project PREPARE (Enhancing PREParedness for East African Countries through Seismic Resilience Engineering). The overall project aims to develop integrated seismic impact assessment tools for Malawi and other East African countries. It includes the identification of seismic hazard in the East African Rift by colleagues in Earth Sciences, as well as assessment of the vulnerability of typical Malawian buildings to earthquake loading by the Civil Engineering team.
The successful candidate will primarily work on numerical modelling of unreinforced masonry buildings to earthquake loading. A particular challenge is the wide variability of the properties of local construction materials, requiring stochastic approaches. The work will involve using advanced numerical modelling tools such as Discrete Element analysis and nonlinear Finite Element analysis, calibrated against material property data collected in Malawi. As a key member of the Civil Engineering team you will generate seismic fragility curves of buildings of different classifications and will assess the effectiveness of low-cost strengthening options.
There is the opportunity for travel to Malawi and possibly other East African countries. In collaboration with our local partners you will perform full-scale tests on masonry structures for validation of the numerical analysis. You will also contribute to an international workshop in Malawi in August 2019.
The post is being offered as a full-time, fixed-term contract for up to 12 months with a possibility of extension for a further few months.
