General Summary/Purpose 
We are looking for energetic, flexible, and motivated teacher to work full-time with young adults with autism. Teacher works on a multi-disciplinary team with specialists in autism, special education, speech-language pathology, fitness, art, and behavior analysis to address communication, academic, daily living, vocational, and leisure skills in home, educational, and community settings in and around New York City. The ideal candidate willingly accepts responsibility, takes initiative, can work autonomously, and sees tasks through to completion with creative approaches and a “can do” attitude. We are looking for dynamic professionals who want to use their time and talent to evolve our organization in collaboration with the team to create and maintain new educational, vocational, and social activities for young adults on the autism spectrum. Experience working with learners with autism and/or significant communicative impairments preferred.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creation and maintenance of educational materials;
  • Creation and implementation of individualized and differentiated lesson plans for 1:1, 1:2, or small group instruction to learner(s) with autism;
  • Assessment of individual learner needs, identification of corresponding measurable goals, and monitoring of learner progress;
  • Management of behind the scenes details required for teaching designated skills;
  • Availability to work on a flexible schedule when needed (evenings and weekends)

Position requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Speech Pathology, Social Work or related discipline required. Master’s preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid required.
  • Must pass reference checks and a background check.
  • Five or more years of experience working with individuals with autism preferred (at least 3 years required).
  • Experience working with adults with autism preferred.
  • Knowledge of a variety of educational approaches and instructional strategies preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
