Course Description

Honors 231: “Reading the Qur’an” Is the Qur’an a great book? Obviously, the answer to that question is yes. The Qur’an brought Islam into being as a world religion almost 1500 years ago. And today it serves as an indispensable guide and source of inspiration for more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. It is a daily presence in the lives of Muslims – read, seen, and heard more often than any other book. At the same time, the Qur’an questions our definition of the book: it doesn’t tell a linear story or set out numbered commandments, like Jewish and Christian scripture. The Qur’an creates a unique relationship between reader and text, and challenges us to think differently about what we do when we read. In this course, we will read the Qur’an in English translation, alongside pre-Islamic poetry, modern scholarship on the Qur’an, and literary and artistic works inspired by the Qur’an. And we’ll study topics like Qur’anic recitation, tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), and ecological and feminist readings of the Qur’an. Our aim is to think about the Qur’an as great book and as great literature: a book meant to challenge the intellect and stir the soul.
