About the opportunity 

The Department of Germanic Studies within the School of Languages and Cultures is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in German language and cultures.

This role is a great opportunity for a teacher and scholar with a strong research profile and publications (compatible with the Department’s research programs) and active research grant applications.

The successful applicant will also supervise honours and postgraduate research students in German Studies, contribute to core units in the German Studies major including developing and teaching German language classes at all levels.

There’s also the opportunity to make an active contribution to interdisciplinary teaching by developing elective units for inclusion in one of the following areas: German Studies, European Studies, International and Comparative Literature, and/or Translation studies (areas of focus would reflect the applicants’ expertise, highlighting the close link between interdisciplinary teaching and research encouraged within the School).

Other work will include coordinating teaching and mentoring at the appropriate level, taking on roles in administration in the Department and School and engaging in outreach activities to promote German studies within the University and in the broader community.

About you

• a completed PhD in German Studies
• native or near native competency in German and English
• a strong record of peer-reviewed publications relative to opportunity
• demonstrated ability, relative to opportunity, to develop and maintain an active research program including major research grant applications
• demonstrated experience in designing and teaching German language modules at levels A-C (CEFR) 
• demonstrated experience and commitment to innovative course development, teaching and assessment methods (for example classroom-based e-learning tools and peer-assessment strategies)
• a clear plan for promoting student retention and achieving high levels of language competency
• excellent problem-solving, time management, and interpersonal skills
• demonstrated ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment and to coordinate and mentor, relative to opportunity
• the ability to assume academic roles in administration and planning in the Department and School.
