Background
The Department of Biology at Fiji National University is engaged in teaching core courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels as well as training of students in research leading to post-graduate diploma, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Our biology courses cover the general disciplines of ecology, biodiversity, conservation, marine biology, physiology, cell and structural biology, genetics, animal and plant systematics, developmental biology, and microbiology. The Department of Biology at FNU is seeking a highly motivated staff member to impart quality teaching, training and research in these areas.
An Assistant Professor has developed his/her own research and teaching interests, and is becoming known nationally for his/her work. They will publish regularly in peer-reviewed international journals or other appropriate outlets, and are likely to have edited collections of work or meeting proceedings. They will also have chaired sessions at, or have been part of, the organising committees of academic conferences or relevant disciplinary meetings. They should be beginning to show Academic Leadership in their teaching and/or their research speciality and be involved in administrative duties at least at Department/School level. The successful applicant will be required to contribute to teaching of existing courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in the areas of microbiology and cell biology, and possibly other fields (e.g., molecular biology/biotechnology), as well as to develop new courses and programs relevant to the Department of Biology’s needs. The Appointee may be required to supervise research of post-graduate students leading to award of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in these areas. The Appointee is expected to collaborate with and strengthen current research areas in the School as well as in other areas of biology, addressing local, regional and global challenges. The Appointee must have the ability to interact with and stimulate the interests of students.
Person Specification:
Essential Qualifications.
- PhD field of microbiology or cell biology
- Research active, as evidenced through quality publications in international journals
- High standard of both written and spoken English
Desirable Qualifications– In addition to the above requirements, applicants should also possess the following:
- Academic leadership
- Administrative duties
- Demonstrates evidence of ongoing publications in ranked journals
- Ability to develop new courses/programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels and to teach these effectively;
- Experience supervising M.Sc. and Ph.D. students;
- Proven ability to obtain research grants;
- Broad knowledge of biology with capability to teach in subject areas other than specialization;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Salary Base salary of $56,942.00 plus 10% superannuation
