To celebrate our 2021 bicentenary of pioneering research, we welcome applications for the Bicentennial Chair in research methods. This position will be a joint appointment between the School of Social Sciences (SoSS) and the Edinburgh Business School (EBS) who are seeking to establish a centre of excellence in doctoral training for business and business-related disciplines, plus the wider social sciences, to sit alongside our existing world leading doctoral training programmes in the sciences.

As the Bicentennial Chair in research methods, you will lead the doctoral and pre-doctoral methods training for programmes across both schools. With a large group of staff and students in three main locations, significant international reach and an outstanding record of innovative delivery of training you will provide leadership of a key part of our research mission.

Responsibilities will include: overseeing the marketing of, and recruitment to, our Doctoral Programmes; enhancing a research culture amongst a cohort of full time and part time doctoral students, delivering training that is relevant to social science and business related PGR students and which complies with Heriot-Watt policies and representing PGR development as appropriate at internal and external events. We would also expect you to have a substantive area of research interest beyond research methods, to be research active and fully REF-returnable with an appropriate record of research funding from a range of bodies.

To be considered for this role you must be educated to a PhD level or equivalent in an appropriate subject area, with a strong track record of PhD supervision to completion and examination. You will have significant academic achievements, including an international research reputation and have an understanding of international and national research funding agendas. You should also demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and bring academic staff and professional colleagues together in teams to work as part of a common enterprise.
