Role Description

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate institution and a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. The winner of five prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education, Cranfield University is truly world-leading in its research, teaching and commercial connections.

The University has four Schools; Management (SOM), Defence and Security (CDS), Water Energy and Environment (SWEE), and the largest, Aerospace, Transport Systems and Manufacturing (SATM). There are no traditional discipline based departments but rather eight industry focussed themes spanning the University. Within SATM, these themes are Aerospace, Transport Systems and Manufacturing and the Director of Manufacturing is thus one of the major senior management roles in the University.

SATM is at the forefront of aerospace, transport and manufacturing research. Closely embedded with industry, and with the new forthcoming £65 million Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC), the School, led by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Atkinson, has an annual turnover of £47m and offers unique research capabilities, combining a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates design, technology and management expertise.

The new Director of Manufacturing will possess a flair for management and leadership, be financially astute and capable of inspiring a highly ambitious team of academic staff, postdoctoral fellows and research students, delivering £17m of Cranfield’s business. A member of the University’s Senior Management Team, the Director will work closely with the PVC on the development and delivery of courses of the highest standard, on fostering and leading the development of research activities and maintaining and developing good relations and close collaboration between the University and industry.

The right candidate will be a thought leader of international standing with a substantial record of inspirational leadership achieved at senior management levels in academia. You will hold a PhD in an engineering subject relevant to Cranfield Manufacturing and ideally, at Professorial level, you will have deep experience in motivating research teams and leading a broad teaching portfolio across the manufacturing domain. With an eye for business and commercial flair, you will be expected to identify and deliver new opportunities for growth in a rapidly changing, globally competitive sector.

Exceptionally, the University will consider candidates who have held a senior position in industry, provided there is evidence of the capability to write high quality journal papers and an understanding of the requirements of PhD supervision within an academic framework.

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

Informal enquiries regarding the post should be directed to the University’s appointed advisors, Perrett Laver, contacting Xin Wei on (E); xin.wei@perrettlaver.com or (T); 0207 340 6200, quoting reference number 4000.

Formal Interviews to be held: 15 July 2019
