Position Description

NYU Sydney is seeking a lecturer to teach the subject 'Sports Media Strategies' to undergraduate students during the NYU semester from September 2 - December 13, 2019. The semester is 15 weeks long including a one-week break from October 14-18.

Class meets once a week on Mondays 3.30-6.30pm at our academic centre in The Rocks.

The appointed person will take responsibility for the coordination of the course including preparing the weekly classes as well as setting assignments and grading. Lecturers are paid at competitive casual academic rates aligned with local enterprise agreements. In addition to their teaching duties, they will be paid to attend an induction meeting during the orientation week prior and for periodic meetings and training.

Course Description

This course will provide an in depth examination of the different channels of media distribution necessary to adequately market and promote sports activities in Australia. Topics to be covered include: broadcast distribution of sports properties via rights fee as compared to time buy in all forms of traditional and digital media; the value of local, regional and international endorsements; using media distribution for direct marketing or indirect public relations; the impact of new technology on sports media strategy formulation; and legal ramifications of defamation, false light and unfair use of proprietary material. Discussion will include topical issues and case studies that demonstrate the ever-changing nature of the industry. Throughout the class will be required to complete a mix of reading assignments and written briefs as well as a mid-term assignment and a final paper and presentation.

The course is part of the Bachelor of Science in Sports Management Program sponsored by the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport in NYU's School of Professional Studies. A sample syllabus is available online.

Applicants must be based in Sydney, have a background in Sport Media and Communication, Sport Marketing, or a related field and experience teaching university students in this field. Applicants with industry experience and/or contacts within the Australian sport media sector a plus.
