Developing Outdoor Areas in an Urban Environment

About the position

At the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, https://www.ntnu.no/ibm, there is a PhD fellowship available. The candidate will be a member of the research group for project management, and the theme is holistic digitization of the building, construction and real estate industry. The research project is designed in collaboration with Bærum municipality. The project focuses on  "Interactive Urban Management"  within the built environment, and jointly with fellows in "Smart and Sustainable Property Management", "Useroriented BIM" digitization and "Smart Travel Habitats (RVU)".

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences, the arts, medicine, teacher education, architecture to fine art. Cross-disciplinary cooperation results in innovative breakthroughs and creative solutions with far-reaching social and economic impact. 

The NTNU and Bærum kommune are preparing a new project with a focus on development of future city, especially from 3 topics: i/ Ecosystems in neighborhood: The innovation dimension; ii/ PPPP - the human dimension; iii/ Social orientation. The special attention will be on increasing quality of life through co-design, co-creation and co-ownership principles in Fornebu area.

The project proposal addresses the principles of the built environment that enable maximizing the economic, social and environmental opportunities of inhabitants, thereby laying the foundations for a prosperity and health. The core attributes of the principles discussed are open governance, value orientation and community engagement. The objective is to develop a model for sustainable urban development based on value sharing and an understanding of urban "ecosystems" as one where economic success creates societal improvements and well-being for people, commercial actors and society. The main stakeholder groups examined are users and commercial actors.

The main objective is to create an urban value ecosystem, which has people and environment as the main driving forces and urban facility manager as the main enabler and implementer. In order to meet this, we focus on innovative processes of FM professionalism extended from the building space to the urban space.

Innovation processes should be examined within: i/ urban economics to regenerate the environment (PPPP), ii/ socio-economic aspects with value orientation, iv/ individual/social aspect to inspire people to change their behavior toward sustainable lifestyle (attractiveness, identification), iv/ community engagement with digital and analogue techniques (visualization VR, gaming AR, etc.).

Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in scientific researching or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

  • Good knowledge of sustainable principles
  • Good digital solutions skills
  • Good understanding of the connection between technology, process and human interaction
  • Good knowledge of the Norwegian BAE industry in general  It is positive if you have knowledge of municipal and / or public administration
  • Good oral and written presentation ability in both, one of the Scandinavian languages and English, as the position requires close attention collaboration with employees and residents in Bærum municipality

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years without required duties. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Engineering Science.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
