Occupational Summary
The goal of the Fitness and Wellness Internship is designed to foster the development of a fitness professional interested in the area of Recreation. The intern will receive hands on experience in working with students, and other members, through Fitness & Wellness programming. This position will give exposure to group fitness, personal training, student staff management and development, as well as risk management. This position’s primary focus is personal growth and professional development.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Intern is expected to understand and represent the mission and vision of the fitness program as well as the Duke Recreation and Physical Education department as a whole
  • Assist with hiring and t training of new student staff
  • Assist in creating a group fitness schedule
  • Oversee Fitness Counselor staff
  • Assist in assigning clients to personal trainers,as well as tracking personal training revenue an obtaining client feedback
  • Help to plan and lead personal training in-services
  • Teach group fitness classes
  • Personal train clients in a one on one and/or group setting
  • Administer fitness assessments
  • Collaborate with other Duke Recreation and Physical Education staff members on departmental events
  • Marketing and campus outreach to promote our programs
  • Attend biweekly professional staff meetings
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Human Health Performance, Recreation, or related f field
  • Current certification in Group Exercise through ACE or AFAA OR Personal Training Certification through an NCCA recognized program (ACE, NSCA, NASM, ACSM, etc.)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Must display good judgment, good communication skills, think independently and willing to take on new initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hold both an accredited group fitness and personal training certification
  • Experience teaching multiple group fitness modalities
  • Prior one on one or group personal training experience
  • Development of fitness/wellness related program(s)

NOTES:
Additional information: This is a ten month, 29.9hr per work week position that will begin on August 1 1, 2019. This position includes parking and professional development support.
