Job Summary

Leads institutional research and assessment activities for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) particularly within the Division of Undergraduate Education. Applies methods of social science research and statistical analysis to issues related to student learning assessment, program review, student recruitment, persistence and retention, equity and inclusion and enrollment management. Responsible for liaising with institutional leaders of accreditation efforts and providing direction and assistance regarding the efforts of LSA to meet HLC accreditation needs. Implements a variety of advanced institutional research projects, including but not limited to survey research, data warehouse report development, performance indicator documentation, business intelligence, and support of student learning assessment. Performs data analysis as required for projects or departments on a variety of topics such as human resources, financials, students, and faculty. Drafts reports for projects, departments and other units of a variety of topics. Considers learning analytics approaches to understanding pathways to success for students, and works with faculty and administrators to integrate new strategies for student learning.

College of Literature, Science and the Arts Undergraduate Education

The administrative home for the Undergraduate Education Division of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) is housed within the of the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. The Division includes twenty-two academic units from across the College, dedicated to student exploration, engagement and learning. We offer curriculum and advising support as well as instructional support for both students and faculty. We house the LSA Curriculum Committee and the University Courses Division. Many of our academic enrichment programs feature high impact educational experiences, such as study abroad, living learning communities, undergraduate research, and civic engagement. We also serve as an incubator for curricular and co-curricular innovation. This Assessment Lead position is a key part of the Undergraduate Education Division that pursues a mission of academic excellence and administrative creativity with a commitment to diversity, access, equity and inclusion for the LSA undergraduate population and the faculty and staff who advise, teach and guide and support them.

Responsibilities*

Assessment and Evaluation (40%)

  • Engages in the design of assessment and evaluation plans for units within the Undergraduate Education division including the Comprehensive Studies Program, the Michigan Learning Communities and other curricular and co-curricular focused units.

  • Collaborates with department or unit leadership and staff to design assessment tools and approaches to advance the assessment and evaluation goals of that particular department or unit.

  • Leads the development, organization, analysis and reporting of data on enrollment, academic success, student learning outcomes, retention, and graduation of students, and make recommendations for improvement strategies.

  • Develops ongoing management tools and reports to be used by the academic departments to assess and evaluate programmatic outcomes.

Data Stewardship (20%)

  • Maintains repository/database of existing assessment practices within LSA as well as relevant student data.

Outreach and Education (25%)

  • Serve as a liaison with various university units and student groups offering programs and services to students in order to provide outreach and support for co-curricular activities on campus.

  • Professional Development and LSA Representation (15%)
  • Represent LSA on university-wide working groups dealing with student surveys, evaluation and assessment,

  • Work with academic departments, co-curricular units and learning communities to design and implement programming, workshops, in-service training, etc. for the promotion of student success.

Required Qualifications*

  • Experience in higher education, especially with undergraduates at a four-year research institution.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in social sciences, education or other relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in gathering information, analyzing data and problem-solving, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to self-initiate, work creatively, independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive matters/materials and to produce original documents of high quality.
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package (i.e., SPSS, R, STATA, SAS). 
  • Experience with qualitative research techniques.
  • Experience developing reports using statistics and various teaming analytics.
  • Ability to present technical outcomes to a variety of audiences using data visualization.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree or higher in social sciences, education or other relevant field.
  • Five years administrative experience in higher education.
  • Proficiency with data manipulation for report creation.
  • Knowledge of University policy and procedures, M-Pathways and the UM Data warehouse.
  • Capacity for creative problem solving innovation and for anticipating future needs.
  • Experience with prospect research, grant writing and submission. 
  • Experience working in diverse communities.

  • Functional knowledge of current computer technologies such as web-based tools, student information systems, data retrieval, and database management.
  • Competency in a variety of software and technological systems such as PeopleSoft, Google Apps, Microsoft Office, Business Objects or SharePoint.

Additional Information 

This position will report directly to the Assistant Deans for Undergraduate Education who, in turn, work to support and advance the assessment and evaluation goals of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.
