‘Actively anticipating the unintended consequences on air quality of future public policies’ (ANTICIPATE) is a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for three years from 13 February 2019. It will bring together policy analysts and policy makers from UK central government, devolved administrations and local and regional authorities, stakeholders from business and civil society organisations, and academics and researchers to review forthcoming policy initiatives for their consequences for air quality.
We are seeking a researcher to assist with the selection of the four policies to be used as case studies; review existing facilitation methods and help to decide on those to be used during the workshops; identify relevant stakeholders for each of the four case studies; organise the programmes for the two workshops to be held for each case study; synthesise the policy outputs from the workshops and help to communicate them to policy and academic audiences; and take the lead in developing a ‘Manual’ about how to organise and run the workshops and associated activities. The latter will involve on going evaluation of the success of the methods used in the case studies.
The post will suit someone who has a PhD in sociology, political science, public policy or a related area, the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of potential stakeholders, from government, local government, business, NGOs, and community groups, an interest in, and preferably some experience of, UK public policy, and an interest in workshop facilitation and the methods typically used for facilitation.
The project is a collaboration between the University of Surrey, the University of Birmingham, UCL and the University of York. The post will be based in Guildford but travel to the other sites will sometimes be required. Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,236).
