The global population is fast increasing which means that the requirement for meat is also increasing, thus leading to exponentially higher greenhouse emissions. In the context of large-scale production, clean meat or cultured meat could be a healthier and safer option for consumers, while being estimated to lead to >90% less greenhouse gases, less water and less land required for its production compared to traditional meat. The Aston University Bioprocess Engineering research group in the School of Life and Health Sciences (LHS) is seeking to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Associate for a fixed term post of 18 months on a project funded by The Good Food Institute (www.gfi.org) to develop a reliable and cost-effective, scalable bioprocess for production of clean meat.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant engineering discipline (i.e. biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering) or a relevant life science discipline (biological sciences, biomedical science or biotechnology).

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of both the engineering aspects of bioprocessing and the fundamental cell biology which underpins this work. The candidate will be expected to have significant experience of aseptic cell culture. Bioreactor culture experience and knowledge would be a plus, but not essential. Training in bioreactor operation will be provided. In addition, applicants must have experience of writing scientific reports and publications to a high quality.
