The Opportunity

The Professor of Primary & Integrated Care reports to the Head of School, School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM) for research, teaching and UNSW service contributions. The position will also report to the Chief Executive at South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) for primary and integrated services.

SPHCM is internationally recognised as a leader in Public Health and Community Medicine with research strengths in Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, Health Services Management, Global Health and Primary Health Care. The School has a core focus in research and teaching to help inform policy, governance, organisation, work and leadership in the health sector through cross disciplinary collaborations with both academia and industry.

The School and its associated Centres are involved in a broad range of activities related to primary care, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research activities in primary care organisation and integration, engagements with multiple stakeholders, and service to the community. One such Centre is the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity (CPHCE) whose research is focused on prevention and management of long-term conditions, primary health care integration, health equity and health informatics with close relationships with local health districts and primary health networks. It has research hubs staff located on campus at UNSW as well as in the SWSLHD.

Covering a significant area in Sydney South Western suburbs, the SWSLHD provides health promotion, preventive and curative health services to a population of approximately 820,000 people. The SWSLHD provides acute care and rehabilitation services through seven hospitals whilst 14 major community health centres provide prevention, early intervention and community-based treatment, palliative care and rehabilitation services. A multi-disciplinary, cross sectoral approach to the integration of primary and hospital services between SWSLHD, South Western Sydney Primary Health Network (SWSPHN), General Practitioners, Community Health and Allied Health services, to ensure high quality, patient centred care is central to this position.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading new and innovative approaches to implementation and assessment of models of primary health and integrated care service delivery in the SWSLHD.
  • Developing high quality research projects, attracting competitive research grants and publishing research results in leading international journals and books.
  • Engaging, leading and fostering a culture of leadership and collegial atmosphere of discovery and enquiry in research in primary health and integrated care services.
  • Leading innovative primary and integrated care training within the SWSLHD and actively contributing to course development, teaching and supervision through SPHCM, the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity and UNSW Medicine.
  • Maintaining a sound governance framework for research activities that includes, appropriate administration, reporting, documentation and compliance of research in accordance with UNSW and SWSLHD policies and procedures.
  • Participating in teaching and research governance in SWSLHD, SPHCM, Faculty and at University levels, and through professional organisations.
  • Being the SWSLHD lead contact for external relations with primary and integrated care professional bodies (e.g. RACGP, Primary Health Networks, Local Government etc.) and contribute to vocational and continuing education for GPs and other primary care providers in South Western Sydney.

About the Successful Applicant

You will have a medical degree (with equivalent doctoral qualifications – i.e. PhD) and eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in NSW and Fellowship of the RACGP/ACRRM or equivalent. You must have a passion for primary care together with extensive professional experience in general practice. You must be a recognised research leader with an outstanding track record in peer-reviewed publications and grant success in areas relevant to primary and integrated care.

You will have demonstrated experience in the delivery of quality undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently in a goal-directed manner yet collaboratively with other staff and external providers.
