Phd Fellowship in Rock Physics Models for Improved 4D Seismic Interpretation

About the position

We have a vacancy for a 3 years PhD Fellowship at Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP), NTNU. The work will be a part of the project: Improved prediction of stress and pore-pressure changes in the overburden for infill drilling at SINTEF's Department of Petroleum, that is supported by the industry and the Research Council. The main objective of this project is to provide calibrated rock-mechanical and rock-physical models for overburden rocks for prediction of stress- and pore-pressure changes in the overburden of a depleting reservoir.

The position reports to Head of Department

Job description

  • The PhD project aims to study the impact of stress and strain changes in the subsurface, particularly in the overburden, on time-shifts observed in repeated (4D) seismic.
  • This work aims to quantify and demonstrate important signatures in 4D data for the quantification of altered mechanical properties of the subsurface resulting from reservoir production (depletion).
  • Part of the work is to study the impact from overburden stress paths (directional stress variations) and offsets (ray-paths) on time-shifts.
  • To achieve this goal, rock physics, geomechanics and geophysics must be successfully integrated in the study.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong relevant academic background in physics, geophysics, petroleum engineering, mechanics or related disciplines with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Experience in computer simulations of mechanics and/or wave propagation (e.g. finite difference and finite element methods) is an advantage. Depending on the background of the candidate, part of the work may be experimental involving planning, acquisition and analysis of static and dynamic data obtained from long term tests on field cores. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Proficiency in oral and written English is a must.

Personal characteristics

  • A high level of personal responsibility and initiative
  • Work independently as well as in team in accordance with the project objectives

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

We offer

Salary and conditions
