Job Description:

The incipient Duke Center for Neurodegeneration and Neurotherapeutics needs a Mouse Colony Manager to oversee and coordinate a large mouse colony and ongoing therapeutic evaluations for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s diseases in addition to ALS.

The successful applicant will:

  • Directly confer with the Center Director to review ongoing work and develop plans for the mouse colony
  • Collaborate with and facilitate the ability of several researchers within the center to successfully undertake their research endeavors
  • Contribute to preclinical trials involving behavioral evaluation of mice for motor function, neurological impairment, and cognition
  • Provide colony management services, e.g., maintaining Excel database, setting upbreeding, ear-tagging, genotyping, and weaning
  • Be responsible for maintaining multiple lines of transgenic mice
  • Serve as the liaison between laboratory researchers and the staff of the Duke Division of Laboratory Animal Research (DLAR)
  • Be responsible for ensuring compliance with IACUC protocols and preparing lab space and researchers for inspections
  • Handle the import and export of lab animals, including ordering animals
  • Effectively communicate & coordinate with center members, and be capable of working independently and in a collaborative environment
  • Be extremely reliable, self-motivated, organized,and have the ability to multi-task
  • Have strong attention to detail with ability to execute detailed testing plans and record procedures
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient and effective lab environment with personal accountability.
