Position Focus:

The Digital Experience Design Lead is responsible for the user experience of the Yale University Library web points of presence, the library’s single most important communications vehicle. Working with partners in the library, the incumbent will drive and deliver digital solutions that present a consistent user experience by unifying information design and information architecture across this broad and diverse space. The position manages, supports, and configures web products, and takes a leadership role in the implementation and future planning for next-generation services.

The current web landscape provides a wealth of information about the Yale University Library, its services, collections, and exhibits, serving as both the digital platform for delivery of library services and resources and the library’s primary communications vehicle to all its constituents and audiences. The Design Lead will provide expertise in web and user experience design, content strategy consulting, and will monitor and support consistency and quality assurance. The position will serve as the IT representative on related advisory committees and work collaboratively with staff members that have shared responsibility for the Library web points of presence. The successful candidate will be technically adept, hands‐on, a self‐starter, passionate about technology, and create sustainable relationships to provide consultative support to service user communities.

The Design Lead is a member of the Yale University Library IT department, reporting to the Director of Client Services and IT Operations. The position will work collaboratively with the Library Director of Communications to ensure the web presence supports, advances, and expresses the idea of one unified library. The position will also work closely with the Assessment and User Experience Research group and other Yale University Library web service owners.

Essential Duties

1. Leads and manages projects to support continuing web development for Yale Library, including planning and implementing website structure, design, and user interface. 2. Oversees distributed content; provides clear documentation, policy and style guides; and works with content owners to ensure a cohesive overall web user experience and environment. Monitors and supports quality assurance, including validation of web pages and compliance with web accessibility guidelines. 3. Manages integration with websites and web enabled applications within the Library and across the university. 4. Coordinate web content development schedules, evaluate web technology services, develop guidelines and standards, and manage daily maintenance of assigned Library web sites. 5. Plans, manages, and implements customization of the primary website and web-based applications to create a cohesive brand and user experience across all applications. 6. Prioritizes, plans and implements new enhancements and tools, focusing on usability and syndication out to content owners. 7. Participates in the larger Yale community of web practice and works collaboratively with the central Yale web development team. 8. Works closely with other members of user experience team to run beta and pilot programs aimed at continuous usability improvements. 9. Researches, assesses and explores new web opportunities, features, and technologies for web applications while providing and overseeing maintenance of existing web applications. 10. Monitors website usage and Google analytics, and creates reports for leadership. 11. Represents Library IT on committees and project teams. 12. May supervise staff, vendors, and/or student workers. 13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of web content management/creation experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated understanding of information design and information architecture, mastery of user interface design and strong visual design sensibility; Skilled in visual, user-centric, and web-based design with expertise in user-centric design process and execution; Demonstrated ability for creating and implementing highly usable designs and layouts.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to build and manage functional and dynamic web based systems using content management systems such as Drupal, including theming and configuration management; Demonstrated ability with HTML, CSS, XML and responsive design principles.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated project management and vendor management skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated initiative and self-direction, including ability to quickly and efficiently prioritize workload to meet deadlines in an environment of multiple and changing priorities.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, communications, or library science. Experience in a library or other academic organization. Experience in or knowledge of coding including PHP and JavaScript programming.
