Position Description:
The Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago seeks a qualified lecturer for Spring quarter 2019 to teach a class in scientific writing for graduate students. The class is offered in conjunction with a graduate research traineeship program in computational environmental sciences (nrt.geosci.uchicago.edu) but is open to students across campus.
The course is intended for students engaged in research and at the stage of working on a paper intended for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and students are expected to bring their work in progress. The course will both teach students the elements of effective science writing using their manuscripts as examples, and students are expected to improve their manuscripts throughout the quarter. The course should also discuss techniques for effective science presentations, and will culminate in a practicum research presentation and production by each student of a final or near-final draft of a manuscript for submission.
Applicants with professional experience in teaching science writing are strongly preferred. This position is part-time and is not benefits eligible. Applicants must currently be authorized to work permanently in the U.S.
Applicants must apply on-line at the University of Chicago Academic Careers website at https://tinyurl.com/yy7sjjwn
Applicants must upload a curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing technical and teaching experience, and a list of three references.
