The European Bioenergy Research Institute carries out world-leading research on biomass, bioenergy and biorefineries. The successful postholder will work with Stellenbosch University in South Africa to extend that knowledge to evaluate the potential to implement sustainable biorefineries in the global south, with a particular focus on integration of biochemical production into typical southern pulp and paper mills. This provides an opportunity to develop process modelling and analytical skills while working with leading international partners on a topic that could make a major significant contribution to sustainable development.

The postholder will review existing knowledge and modelling capability of pulp and paper mills and develop process models that adapt the basic configuration using thermochemical and biological pathways to renewable chemical products. This will involve close collaboration with overseas academic and industrial partners in South Africa, and a visit to Stellenbosch University and associated industrial partners. The postholder will have responsibility for production of a final report indicating the potential for such biorefinery developments.

The post requires a PhD or equivalent experience in bioenergy process modelling, knowedge of biomass processing, conversion and bioproducts, as well as experience in academic report writing and publication. Strong modelling, IT and communication skills are essential.
