About the opportunity 

With an enormous growth of network data, network analytics has emerged as a key technique to understand complex data and their relationships across various disciplines, such as information science, sociology, finance, economics, and so forth. Network data takes forms of social networks, communication networks, financial networks, organisational networks, generated from all aspects of today’s social and economic organisations. Network data can also be constructed from text, time series, activity logs, and many other types of data. Therefore, their potential applications are vast and include understanding flows of information and influence within organisations, supply chains and financial markets.

The Business Analytics Research Group at the University of Sydney offers an exciting opportunity for a highly self-motivated postdoctoral researcher to help develop the next generation of machine learning algorithms for complex network data. We are currently investigating new theoretical foundations and building new methodologies for representing, modelling, and analysing networks that are scalable, adaptive, and applicable to a wide range of network analytic tasks. We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in machine learning, data mining, statistical learning, deep learning with highly structured data, and network analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the wider research community by publishing high quality research outcomes in top machine learning and data mining venues, as well as contribute to solving real-world projects and finding solutions to some of the most challenging technical problems, in close collaboration with Data61 -- the Australia’s largest data innovation group.

The Discipline of Business Analytics is one of the foremost groups in Australia undertaking research in Data Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research and Statistics with applications to business problems. The discipline has research strengths in the areas of forecasting, Bayesian statistics, deep learning, optimisation, network analysis and econometrics. To further strengthen the machine learning capability of our research group, we are open to appointing researchers specialized in machine learning and data mining, with a focus on deep learning and graph algorithms over large-scale networks.
