The UNSW Graduate Research School (GRS) is responsible for managing Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates and supervisors. The GRS provides leadership, support and central administration for this cohort within the UNSW research community, as well as the research training leaders who work with them.

The GRS also supports strategic HDR programs including the flagship UNSW 2025 Strategy Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme and Industry-engaged initiatives.

About the role

  • $ 121,591 - $ 129,021 (Plus 17% Super)
  • Full Time Continuing

The successful candidate is responsible for providing strategic leadership and support to the Director, GRS for the implementation and management of high quality research training programs which align with the Academic Excellence, Social Engagement and Global Impact pillars of the UNSW 2025 Strategy. The position will manage a team of high performing professional staff to develop and implement new HDR specialised programs and deliver high quality, professional and engaged services which seamlessly integrate UNSW’s strategic objectives. This includes leading the design and delivery of the GRS communication and engagement strategy for HDR candidate engagement and HDR profile building. This position works across the GRS and with external stakeholders to develop and implement strategic initiatives to improve the quality of research training opportunities at UNSW.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Develop and implement strategies to provide strategic HDR programs which are aligned to the UNSW Strategy and responsive to national strategic imperatives.
  • Manage the operationalisation of strategic HDR programs to ensure ongoing integration with current systems and processes in support of these programs.
  • Ensure the delivery of industry engaged PhD programs as well as internships and mentoring opportunities to UNSW HDR candidates.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A postgraduate qualification with significant relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of relevant training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives and manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders through to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and lead a high performing team by motivating, coaching and managing staff to develop a client-focussed work culture and achieve organisational goals in a complex environment of continuous change.
  • An excellent understanding of all aspects of the Higher Degree Research candidate lifecycle and the complex requirements for this cohort of researchers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the current national and international policy landscape in research training and the higher education sector
