About the scholarship

In the last few decades, an enormous array of bone implants with various biomaterials and designs has been used for reconstructive surgeries, but there is no consensus on the best material or design. Each of these cranial implants, has its own advantages and disadvantages.

In this PhD research project, we seek to, on the one hand, utilise novel integrative software tools to design and develop a novel implant that will support bony ingrowth and vascularization. Secondly, we will generate design concepts that allow for flexibly adaptive and more cost-effective manufacturing of a wide range of implant products. For example, the implant may also have an integrated permeable interior liner that acts as cushion for the intraosseous contents and yet allows trans-osseous tissue fluid movement. The research may also look into new material and/or different material constituents and geometrical configurations of the implant structure.

The project uniquely combines engineering design with materials and manufacturing skills, which will qualify the candidate for an excellent career in biomedical implant/device R&D industry, and/or academia.

There is ONE full PhD Scholarship available for the duration of three years, with a potential, additional 4th year. There will be opportunities for additional research assistant and sessional tutoring work.
