Following the formation of a new combined School of Engineering and Computer Science in August 2018, we are seeking to appoint two Heads of Department to drive forward existing and new study programmes and research across Engineering and Computer Science. 

The role of the Head of Department of Engineering, is one of strategic leadership, ensuring the highest standards of teaching, learning, research, enterprise and scholarship in the subject(s) or discipline(s) for which the Department is responsible. The post holder will be responsible for strategic leadership in engineering education, research and enterprise activity in order to meet the requirements for engineering and technology related degree programmes, and research and industry engagement.

Main duties & responsibilities 
The Head of Engineering will be responsible for strategic management, academic quality assurance, subject standards and discipline in their Department and within their respective subjects and disciplines. They will ensure operational delivery and effectiveness of teaching within the Department and where required overseas, will promote research including commercial activity, and will support academic partnerships internationally. They will have responsibility for the staff and financial management of the department, will contribute to the strategic management and policy development within the School and will, where required, deputise for the Dean.

Skills and experience needed 
Knowledge and expertise within the discipline area. Knowledge and understanding of the key strategic goals of the University and of the drivers and developments in engineering education, research and future technology developments in the engineering sector. Experience of teaching across a range of levels including executive and/or postgraduate as well as undergraduate level is desirable. Proven management, planning, organisation and leadership skills, and the ability to work successfully with a multi-disciplinary team of staff. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven ability to build successful working relationships across the University and with external organisations, whilst developing or managing innovation, enterprise or research activity. 

Qualifications required 
A Doctorate in a relevant subject, or substantial industrial or academic experience within a relevant subject. 

Professorship
The Appointment Panel for the post will be constituted in such a way that if the successful candidate fulfils the University's Professorial criteria, then the Panel may award a Professorial title to the successful candidate. If you are interested in a Professorial title, please ensure you clearly state this in your application and provide the names and contact details of three academic referees of appropriate standing in the field, who may be approached by the University prior to interview.

Heads of Department will also have an opportunity to be considered for the role of Deputy Dean alongside other senior academic staff in the School. We particularly welcome applications from suitably qualified female academics as they are currently under-represented at senior levels in the School. The School holds Athena Swan Bronze awards in Engineering and Computer Science and is ambitious to attain Silver and ultimately Gold awards.
