Position Overview

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region.

The School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) is one of four Schools in CAP. RegNet is a dynamic community of scholars from different disciplines united by our interest in governance and regulation. RegNet has received international recognition as one of the world’s most vibrant governance and regulatory academic centres, combining rigorous interdisciplinary research with innovative forms of knowledge-translation locally, nationally and globally. Our work is built on principles of justice, sustainability and human well-being. Currently we work in the following thematic areas: Climate, Energy & the Environment; Human Rights Law & Justice; Society, Safety & Health; Trade, Investment & Intellectual Property. We welcome new research directions.

We are seeking an outstanding early career researcher to join a research team working on two food and nutrition related-projects. The first is a Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funded program of work “Smart and responsive regulatory approach to population nutrition”. The second is an ARC Discovery project “Governing harmful commodities: the case of ultra-processed foods in the Asia Pacific region”.

The Postdoctoral / Research Fellow will play a central role in both of these projects. Poor diets and population nutrition are arguably the failure of public policy and of the regulation and governance of the food system. These failures have resulted in food environments full of readily available, affordable and heavily marketed unhealthy foods. The aim of the first project is to map and critically evaluate Australia’s food and nutrition regulation and governance regime and identify how to make it fit-for-purpose. The second project’s aim is to provide evidence on how to effect the development and implementation of inter-sectoral policy to reduce the supply and consumption of ultra-processed foods, with a focus on fiscal, marketing and trade policy levers.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD / equivalent research experience in the field of regulatory studies / political science / public policy, with a specific focus on public health nutrition and a demonstrated ability to articulate and prosecute innovative research in the field of food governance and regulation.
