This three-year PhD programme provides an exciting opportunity for outstanding graduates with an interest in cardiovascular disease. Aston Medical School is looking for an enthusiastic graduate to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying idiopathic cardiomyopathy using genetic modified murine models. The candidate will be based in the Aston Medical Research Institute under a supervisory team with expertise in clinical cardiology (Professor Francisco Leyva) and cardiovascular biology (Dr Keqing Wang and Professor Asif Ahmed). This studentship offers broader research trainings for the candidate.
Idiopathic Cardiomyopathy (ICM), a primary cardiac disorder, is the major cause for heart failure. ICM is a complex disorder with heterogeneous pathogenesis. It is a significant burden on health care systems. The underlying mechanisms of ICM remain unclear.
The objectives of this project are to develop in vivo cardiomyopathy models using genetic modified mice to obtain insights into the molecular mechanisms of ICM. The student will study the effects of volume overload onto cardiac remodelling, cardiomyocyte functions and gene profiles. Genetic modified murine models of ICM enable the identification of novel genes that are critical for cardiac function. The student will get a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying ICM and translational implications.
Eligibility & Funding
Candidates will have a good Bachelor (Hons.) degree (either first class or upper second class) or hold an MSc in biomedical/biological science or relevant discipline and experience in Biomedical research and documenting research projects.
The English Language requirements for non-native speakers e.g. IELTS with minimum marks of 6.0 in each section and an overall band of 6.5.
This studentship covers the home/EU tuition fees and stipend of £14,777 in 2018/9. Tuition fees are covered at the home UK/EU rate set by Aston University. Non UK/EU applicants must show evidence of their ability to cover the difference between home fees (£4,260 for 2019/20) and overseas fees (£19,000 for 2019/20) for the duration of study.
