Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.Some of the specific techniques used in the laboratory include: cell culture, invivo experiments involving mice, studying retinal morphology via plastic sections and electron microscopy,immunofluorescence, immunocy to chemistry, RNA purification, polymerasechain reaction,Western blot, apoptosis assays, and ELISAs.

Work Performed

  • The technician will perform a variety of complex technical duties to support Dr. Cousins’ research program.
  • Specifically, the technician will: conduct experiments, under Dr. Cousins’ and Dr.Hadziahmetovic’s guidance, using techniques described above; compile and analyze data from these experiments, and will document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results.
  • Confer with Dr. Cousins and Dr. Hadziahmetovic to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments;
    • make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required;
    • review laboratory methods manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments; determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests;
    • help organize and orchestrate invivo studies, including pre-operative set-up and post-operative examinations;
    • maintain a colony of transgenic mice; obtain,prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances formicroscopic examination;
    • prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions; sustain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties;
    • ensure that expenditures are in-line with budget; clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Review work of lower level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a science-related field is required
