Job Summary

Be a part of the University of Michigan Health-System Department of Pharmacy Services and have a direct impact on our successful efforts for continuous improvement in medication use and patient outcomes!  The Department of Pharmacy is recruiting a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Medication Use Policy to improve patient care outcomes by reviewing new medications for formulary inclusion, managing policies, protocols, and guidelines designed to improve the safe, effective, and cost effective use of medications, teaching students and residents on all aspects of medication use policy, supporting pharmacy and therapeutics committee and subcommittee activities, providing health care professional education, and conducting medication use evaluations to ensure compliance with restrictions and other policies.

The target salary range will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities*

The University of Michigan Health System, world renowned for its excellence in patient care, teaching, and research, is accepting applications for a full-time Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, Medication Use Policy. As an integral member of the Pharmacy Department, this individual will work closely with medical staff, nursing, and committees to development and implement medication use policies which ensure safe and effective medication use. In this role, they will interface with medical specialties regarding medication formulary, medication use standards, medication improvement initiatives, and evidence-based use of medications. The selected individual will:

  • Participate in the formulary management decision-making process, including the development of effective strategies for maintaining drug use within protocols developed by the P&T Committee for both inpatient and ambulatory care drug formularies
  • Develop organizational approaches for optimizing evidence-based, safe and effective medication use
  • Efficiently perform evidence-based scientific evaluation of the medical literature evaluations using information from multiple databases and other sources
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the status of drug restrictions
  • Educate health care professionals using multiple communication methods, such as newsletters, emails, the pharmacy intranet, and other means
  • Help facilitate organizational stewardship in the use of medications
  • Work with electronic medical record pharmacists to optimize the use of clinical decision support tools and order sets to improve medication use process and patient outcomes
  • Apply knowledge of data, data management and data analysis to facilitate strategic decisions

Required Qualifications*

  • A Doctor of Pharmacy degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of two years of pharmacy residency or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Eligible to be licensed to practice as a pharmacist in the State of Michigan
  • Broad knowledge of pharmacotherapy and medication use within a health-system
  • Excellent organizational, teamwork, interpersonal, time management, consensus-building, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent communication skills (fluency in writing, reading and speaking English)
  • Experience in student and resident education
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual dexterity movements (i.e., keyboard data entry)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a PGY-2 specialty residency in drug information
  • Prior experience in formulary management at an integrated health system level
  • Prior experience completing evidenced-based formulary reviews and/or writing supportive medication evaluations
  • Prior experience presenting clinical information to providers and committees
  • Prior clinical pharmacy practice in an acute and/or ambulatory care environment
  • Experience in pharmaceutical outcomes measurement, pharmacoeconomic modeling to determine the impact of medications on health-system costs and patient outcomes, and value based clinical decision making
  • Experience in developing report requirements, retrieving data from large databases, and/or SQL
  • Active involvement with state and national professional associations

Additional Information

Key Outcomes

Successful deployment of this position will be represented by successful presentation of drug monographs, policies, protocols and guidelines at medical staff committees which improve drug efficacy and safety while avoiding unnecessary drug expenses.

Supervision Received

Direct supervision is received from the Manager, Medication Use Policy

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision is exercised over pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and pharmacy interns.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
