About the position
We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at Department of Energy and Process Engineering.
A PhD position (scholarship) is vacant at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The position is of 3 years duration.
The position will be part of FRIC – Fire Research and Innovation Centre, established in Trondheim by RISE Fire Research (www.risefr.com), Sintef (www.sintef.no/en), NTNU and a number of industry and public partners and funded by the Research Council of Norway and partners of the centre. The main goal of the centre is improved evidence-based decision-making and solutions for fire safety and fire protection in the built environment. The objective of the PhD project is modelling of turbulent combustion at reduced oxygen concentrations, aka. underventilated fires, with relevance for the built environment.
The candidate will be supervised by Professor Ivar S. Ertesvåg.
The task of the position will be to advance CFD modelling of turbulence-chemistry interactions at reduced oxygen concentrations. This will include chemical kinetics in turbulent flames, interactions between turbulence and chemistry, influences of increased chemical timescale (lower Damköhler number) on modelling of turbulence-chemistry interactions, development and testing of models for use with averaged (RANS) and large-eddy simulations (LES). Modelling will primarily be based on OpenFoam, while other codes might also be relevant. Simulations will be validated against experimental data.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in mechanical engineering, physics or similarly relevant education with emphasis on computational fluid dynamics, with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Very good English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
In the evaluation and comparison of several applicants, proven abilities to learn, work independently, conduct and publish similar research will be beneficial. Experience with CFD and coding/programming is required, and knowledge of OpenFoam is a benefit.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant
The position requires a high level of personal responsibility and initiative. The candidate should be able to work independently as well as in team.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
