Salary:      £31,302 to £37,345 per annum plus benefits
Fixed Term Contract until 09/2021
Post Type:      Full Time
Closing Date:      Tuesday 26 February 2019
Interview Date:      Tuesday 05 March 2019

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit a full-time researcher to the “CUREX: seCUre and pRivate hEalth data eXchange” project funded by the European Union as part of the H2020 programme. The successful candidate will join the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (https://www.surrey.ac.uk/surrey-centre-cyber-security) for up to 30 months, working on designing and developing methodologies for selecting optimal cyber security and privacy controls in CUREX use cases.

The vision of CUREX is to safeguard patient privacy and increase their trust in the currently vulnerable critical healthcare information infrastructures, especially in cases where data is exchanged among healthcare stakeholders within any business, operational and systemic cross-border environment. By leveraging novel methods on ontological health data modelling, vulnerability discovery, threat intelligence, cybersecurity and privacy risk assessment methodologies, and state-of-the art in blockchain technologies for health data, CUREX aims at enabling secure and authorised sensitive health data exchange.

By capitalising on technologies developed for the well-known H2020 project MyHealthMyData (MHMD), CUREX will offer a secure-by-design business network based on the MHMD blockchain technologies and software that will provide accountability and auditability functionalities that will increase trust among hospitals and care centres. CUREX will provide GDPR-compliant tools and applications targeted towards healthcare professionals and individuals, offering a secure and private-by-design environment to access and exchange data.

In addition to supporting the research project with internal and external collaborators, the position will serve as a platform for the research fellow to develop their career and profile as an independent researcher. The potential for the development of knowledge and skills at the intersection of cyber security management and mathematical optimisation may help the research fellow develop an independent research agenda. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr Manos Panaousis and Dr Kaitai Liang.

The Department of Computer Science, within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, has an international reputation for research and teaching. Research in the department is focused on two main areas: Secure Systems, and Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering, with Surrey recognized by the National Cyber Security Centre as one of 17 Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research. Its security related research is focused on protocol analysis, security verification, trusted computing, data privacy, access control, privacy preserving security, cryptography, and distributed ledger technologies and decision-support for cybersecurity and privacy.

We are looking for applicants who hold, or are near completion of, a PhD in a relevant subject. (Relevant professional experience may be considered.) The successful applicant will demonstrate experience and knowledge of at least one of the following areas:

Good software implementation skills are highly desirable.

The post is available to start in April 2019 and runs to end of September 2021.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Manos Panaousis at e.panaousis@surrey.ac.uk or +44 (0)1483 682651.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.6 (£37,345).
