Course Description:

Engineering Innovation (EI) is a summer course for high school students who have an interest in learning more about engineering. EI is administered by the Center for Educational Outreach in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The mission of the Center is to increase the number of youth pursuing STEM education and careers.  Engineering Innovation is designed to give students a significant understanding of engineering, allowing them to make informed college and career decisions.

Engineering Innovation is based on an introductory engineering course taught to undeclared freshmen engineering students at JHU. EI covers a range of fundamental engineering topics including materials science, civil, mechanical, electrical, robotics, and chemical engineering. The course includes lectures, but focuses on hands-on lab experiments and group projects. Graded coursework includes lab reports, a mini research report, homework assignments, weekly quizzes, and a final exam. At the end of the course, students who earn an A or B receive JHU credit for the course.  Ultimately, the goal of the course is to expose students to engineering principles, allow them to apply the math and science they learn in high school to solving real world problems, and to help students develop critical thinking skills.

Teaching Fellow Description:

We are looking for teaching fellows who understand, appreciate and can apply an instructional style that emphasizes the process of problem-solving rather than memorizing material. The object is to engage students by getting them to think and participate rather than being lectured to. Each EI class has a broad range of 16-24 students with diverse backgrounds and this role must be prepared to accommodate a multitude of learning styles. Finally, the teaching fellow must be able to engage, encourage and excite the students.

It should be noted that each EI class is taught by a team comprised of a teaching fellow and an instructor who is a PhD-level engineer with college teaching experience. The instructor is the lead teacher when it comes to delivering course content.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates will have a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering or math discipline.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a high school teacher in a STEM discipline, excellent classroom management skills, and knowledge of Algebra II and Trigonometry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates with degrees in engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

Teaching Fellow Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of teaching fellows include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching fellows must be present and available during the entire course. New teaching fellows must attend training in Baltimore, MD.
  • Teaching fellows must work alongside an instructor to help organize the course, give lectures in their areas of expertise, grade assignments and give supplementary instruction.
  • Teaching fellows’ main responsibility is to help instructors with classroom management, including helping the instructor relate the course material to high school students.
  • Teaching fellows must help set up, supervise laboratories, and enforce lab safety.
  • Teaching fellows must be available to provide extra assistance to individual students as needed.
  • Teaching fellows at Maryland sites are required to participate in grading final exams the week following the end of the course.

Engineering Innovation Course Dates:

  • The tentative dates for EI in 2019 are June 24th to July 19th, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3p.m.
  • There will be no class on July 4th. 
  • A few of our sites operate on a different schedule.

  • Teacher training is tentatively scheduled to be held on the main campus of JHU in Baltimore, MD from June 6-14, 2019. 
  • Travel expenses for training will be reimbursed.

Salary:

  • Teaching Fellows will be paid hourly for the course and for training.
  • Teaching fellows in Maryland will participate in final exam grading and will be paid for their time to assist with grading of the final exams.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
