Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) is looking to support exceptional postdoctoral candidates to apply for the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF).

The FLF aims to grow the strong supply of talented individuals needed to ensure that UK research and innovation continues to be world class. The call is open to early career researchers from anywhere in the world and is expected to be extremely competitive. A comprehensive package of support (for up to seven years) is offered, including the fellow's salary and justified research, staff and training costs.

Further details about the FLF can be found on the UKRI website.

Application Process:

To help identify the strongest candidates to support, AMBS is running an open call. All prospective candidates should submit the following documents to with the subject “UKRI Future Leaders May 2019 application” by midnight on 20th February 2019:

  • A one-page covering letter outlining fit to the scheme’s Person Specification
  • A two-page CV (including education, work experience and publications)
  • A two-page Case for Support. This should outline the research to be carried out using a format similar to that expected by UKRI in the final application.
  • A 150 word abstract. This should be written for a lay audience.

Applications will be reviewed by an expert panel and those shortlisted will be notified no later than 22nd March 2019. Shortlisted candidates will then be able to access a range of AMBS services to develop their full application ahead of the UKRI deadline of 30th May 2019.

It should be noted that an application at this stage is expected to be an indication of a firm commitment to submit to this scheme with AMBS support and should not be a speculative application.

For more information about the application process contact the AMBS Research Office –

Eligibility Criteria

The FLF is open to talented early career researchers looking to transition to and/or establish themselves as independent researchers. Whilst UKRI does not provide a formal definition of this, it should be broadly understood to include any researcher awarded a PhD within approximately the last 8 years. Career breaks and time away from academia will be taken into account.

Applicants do not have to be formally connected to the University of Manchester or any other research organisation. However the proposed projects should be closely aligned to the existing expertise in AMBS. Details of our research can be found on our website.

Given that any successful FLF applications will transition into a full-time position at AMBS, candidates should suggest possible mentors from within the School in their Case for Support. All shortlisted candidates will be provided with at least one academic mentor to assist with the development of the full application.
