General Summary/Purpose
The purpose of this position is to assist with data management and general duties in Dr. Koehler’s Exposure Sciences Laboratory including conducting field visits, meeting with research participants, developing data management systems, and conducting environmental and health assessments as needed. This person will assist with a study evaluating air quality in Baltimore City using low-cost sensor technology.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities will include data processing, installing and calibrating air quality instruments, and traveling to field sites for routine maintenance of instruments. Data processing tasks will include downloading large data sets and using and developing computer code (Matlab preferred, R accepted) to manipulate, clean, and organize data. Will assist with equipment maintenance, preparing samplers for deployment with participants in air quality studies, and data quality control and analysis. Additional responsibilities include scheduling participant visits, calling participants to remind them of appointments, posting appointments to research calendar; obtaining informed consent from study participants; conducting home environmental and health assessments; collecting environmental samples, health measures and biospecimens; administering questionnaires to participants; dispersing and tracking participant payment. Must own or have regular access to a vehicle. Must be willing to drive to field sites in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. 2 years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in a computer programming language is required (Matlab preferred).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as email and phone etiquette; knowledgeable about and comfortable working with adults and children in Baltimore City.
- Ability to use basic tools (screwdriver, drill, etc.) for installing equipment preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the Matlab computing language and proficiency with Redcap use and form development.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
