Position Overview

The incumbent will assist in the organisation and delivery of surgical training to students in the veterinary science program at James Cook University. While the focus is primarily surgical teaching the incumbent will also assist in the delivery of the veterinary anatomy program to the lower years of the veterinary program.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Oversee and help manage activities in surgical teaching facilities during scheduled teaching for years 4 and 5.
  2. Supervise and instruct students performing surgical procedures and providing pre-operative and post- operative care.
  3. Teach and demonstrate in BVSc practical classes, tutorials and clinical rotations in the areas of surgery and anatomy
  4. Maintain a high standard of animal welfare and daily care of animals used in live-animal practical classes, including the keeping of formal medical records for any investigations, diagnoses, animal remedies used, pharmaceuticals administered and procedures carried out.
  5. Participate as an examiner in practical assessment activities such as MSAT and other practical examinations.
  6. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values and the University's policy on Animal Welfare and Ethics.
  8. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage  in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.
  9. Supporting the administrative functions of the school, through work on various committees, and organisationally through subject, course or year coordination as indicated in schedule 4 of the Enterprise Agreement.

Generic  Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Lecturer Veterinary Surgery is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer Veterinary Surgery is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Lecturer Veterinary Surgery is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the wellbeing of the University which involve public writing or speaking in  accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

The holder of this position must be:

  • Vaccinated and/or demonstrate immunity to Q fever
  • Registered, and maintain registration, with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of QLD

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  1. Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent with registration as a veterinary surgeon of good standing in QLD
  2. Demonstrated experience and commitment to excellence in practical teaching of veterinary surgery and veterinary anatomy
  3. Familiarity with the day to day running of a veterinary surgical facility to a good, general practice standard
  4. The ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines, in accordance with the College’s principles, policies, procedures and practices
  5. Demonstrated high levels of written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills in communicating to diverse audiences including colleagues, students, industry representatives and the public

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:

  1. Several years of practical experience working as a veterinary surgeon
  2. An advanced clinical qualification (eg ANZCVS membership) in veterinary surgery.
