A Postdoctoral Research Associate Position (PDRA) is available to carry out research for National Grid fully funded IEC61850 Cyber Resilient Electrical Substation Technology (CREST) project. The aim of the CREST project is to address the cyber security and secondary system resilience issues in order to facilitate the application of digital substation technology on the National Grid transmission network.

The work will focus on:

  • New and emerging techniques and processes to manage cyber security risk, protect/prevent, detect, respond and restore substation secondary equipment
  • Application of international standards to achieve required cyber security targets
  • Digital substation resilience and implementation issues, such as mixed (analogue/digital) designs, failure modes, network optimisation and monitoring

The work will be carried out at the University of Manchester’s Virtual Site Acceptance Testing and Training (VSATT) laboratory to demonstrate new and emerging cyber resilient technologies dealing with equipment failure or any form of cyber event in the context of a digital substation environment configured to the IEC61850 suite of standards.

You should hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification in computer science or electrical power systems engineering. Expertise in power system Protection and Control, substation digitisation, real-time hardware testing, and computer science and software development are desirable for this interdisciplinary research project.

You should have a proven ability to work independently, strong data analysis and computer programming skills and present results in an effective manner. Good written and oral communication skills are also essential.
