Role Description

Cranfield University is currently a world leader in Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) having pioneered new methods and techniques to successfully build large scale parts up to 6 m long.  As a consequence of this successful research activity we have recently been awarded a large £5.7m project funded by EPSRC entitled New Wire Additive Manufacture (NEWAM). 

The Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre (WELPC) has been at the forefront of welding and WAAM for over fifty years, pioneering new techniques and material applications. We have a large research activity (≈£1.2 million per annum) which is funded from both government and industrial sources. 

This project will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Manchester (materials), University of Strathclyde (NDT) and Coventry University (structural integrity). The project’s vision is to transform metal additive manufacture, by pioneering new high build rate wire-based processes to produce net-shape large-scale engineering structures.

To facilitate development of these new processes, a team of 5 PhD and postdoc researchers is being established working on the modelling activities to provide the intellectual basis for the developments of this new generation AM process.

Joining this team, we are now seeking to recruitment a Research Fellow who will develop efficient models to predict thermal and mechanical behaviours of the wire based AM processes. In particular it will be necessary to:

  • Develop efficient FE, semi empirical or analytical model for predict thermal and mechanical behaviours for wire based AM processes
  • Support wire based AM part building activates with new tooling designs based on the predictions of distortions and stresses
  • Assist the understanding and predicting of thermal interactions between multiple energy sources in the wire-based additive manufacture process

You will need to have a PhD (or near completion) in Physics, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering involving numerical modelling. In addition, knowledge of finite element analysis using commercial software, such as Abaqus, as well as residual stress and distortion generation is essential.

You should have a demonstrable track record of high quality research or technical development. Previous experience of student supervision, programming skills and writing of research proposals would also be an advantage, but not essential.
