The Role

Our faculties Australian Astronomical Optics-Macquarie is currently seeking up to two suitably qualified Project Manager.

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will:  

  • Oversee and drive the delivery of complex astronomical instrumentation projects on time, within budget and to specification;
  • Monitor, track and document progress of projects against milestones and budgets, and prepare progress reports for senior management;
  • Develop instrument project plans, schedules, materials and labour budgets for instrument proposals, grant submissions, and internal project planning;
  • Liaise with vendors for high value or high-risk procurements, negotiate, monitor and manage the procurement process for projects including client contracts ensuring appropriate documentation is maintained for variations to scope, price or schedules;
  • Manage the interaction with clients and subcontractors on instrument projects, including meetings, reviews, and reports and managing project related trade-off analyses involving budgetary and scheduling constraints, and performance, complexity, and manufacturability issues.

About You

Drawing on your significant project management experience, ideally within an engineering, physics, astronomy or related field, you will be a skilled negotiator and possess high level influence and relationship management skills. Your open, inclusive and collaborative management style coupled with your proven ability to develop and grow multi-disciplinary teams will be key to success. If you are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature and are flexible and resilient in your approach, then this is a role for you.

Essential:

  • A bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering or related discipline and formal training or equivalent relevant experience in project management and/or systems engineering practises
  • Successfully managing complex technical projects within specification, budget, and schedule;
  • An inclusive, collaborative and flexible management and communication style with a demonstrated ability to develop and manage a multi-discipline team

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) and clients Experience working with clients, subcontractors, and vendors, including project planning, contract negotiation, and project reporting.
