The Senior Associate Director of Development is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of principal and major gifts in support of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Senior Associate Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 100 individual foundation and corporate prospects and execute 100 or more prospect visits annually, focusing on gifts of $100,000+ and a typical goal of $750,000.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
- Develop strategy with the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations and the Director of Development to determine Carey Business School development goals and objectives and measurable fundraising activities, resulting in an annual work plan and mandatory stewardship plan.
- Build and manage a portfolio of 100 prospects with the goal of conducting at least 100 annual visits, in order to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors.
- Staff the Dean as well as School and University leadership for principal and major gift donor visits, including the preparation of corresponding briefing documents.
- Work independent of direct supervision to identify new prospects of high net worth, and pursue those leads through the creation of proposals and closing of gifts. New prospects could be identified through analysis of giving history to the School, introductions from other donors, and independent research.
- Obtain a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and priorities of the Carey Business School in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.
- Prepare and direct preparation of funding proposals, solicitation letters, case statements and other cultivation and informational materials for prospects and donors. These proposals will often encompass a high degree of complexity with individuals, estate gifts, foundations and corporations.
- Work with the Director of Development to develop annual work and mandatory stewardship plans. Utilize central resources such as Development Research, Stewardship, Gift Planning, Principal Gifts, and Foundation Relations as appropriate.
- Where appropriate, work across divisional lines on approaches to shared prospects, representing the interests of the Carey Business School and working to develop the most significant proposals possible for Johns Hopkins.
- On behalf of the entire Carey DAR team, manage the overall fundraising strategy for multiple key affinity groups.
- Represent the Carey Business School on volunteer committees and advisory boards, as determined by the Director of Development. Serve on various Development and Alumni Relations ad hoc committees, as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required. Five years of related professional experience required. Seven (7) + years of experience preferred. Experience should include demonstrated success in individual solicitations (or in partnership with faculty) and in closing major gifts of $100,000+, preferably in a higher education setting. International fundraising experience preferred.
