Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

This vacancy concerns a two-year postdoctoral position starting early 2019 to work on measurement theory and its uses in machine learning, data science and AI. You will work with Turing Fellow Prof Peter Flach and join the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at Bristol but will also be able to spend time at the Turing Institute and work with relevant people there.

About the project:

Issues of measurement are of particular importance in inductive sciences including data science and artificial intelligence, for example when we assess the capability of our models and learning algorithms to generalise beyond the observed data. This project funded by the Alan Turing Institute seeks to make fundamental advances in our understanding of capabilities and skills of models and algorithms in data science and AI, and how to measure those capabilities and skills.

You will work on methods and tools to model the skills of learning machines, as well as standardised benchmarks which will allow skill assessment with only a few well-chosen test sets. You will implement these tools in open-source as part of the Human-Centred AI workbench currently under development in Bristol.

Candidates must have a recent PhD in machine learning, data science, artificial intelligence or a related research area. Further requirements include: excellent and broad conceptual knowledge of the state of the art in machine learning and AI; excellent programming and software development skills; and a deep understanding of and demonstrable skills in data-driven experiments and performance evaluation.

Knowledge of psychometrics, causal modelling and responsible AI is a bonus.
