Currently, overweight and obesity affects over 60% of the UK and US population and is more than just a burden to health. Financial implications to our healthcare system, lost work days and social pressure are just some of the negative effects of the obesity crisis.

By developing research excellence in areas which allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the role obesity has on health, specifically bone health, we will also be making beneficial social, economic and cultural impacts on our society.

This research project will look at the effects of the obesity hormone: leptin, on bone remodelling. Previous research has been conducted on the role of leptin in bone remodelling however, confounding factors of body weight (load), leptin-resistance, experimental model, bone region and analytical technique have resulted in many contradictory publications.

The proposed research will incorporate cutting edge technology to analyse bones collected from a popular rodent model of obesity (Ob/Ob), which have been weight-paired with lean littermate controls. The data collected will test the hypothesis that leptin independent of load/ stress is important for bone remodelling and that these structural changes are due to the activity of the major bone remodelling cells: osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Highly motivated, with the ability to work independently and plan and organise effectively, you will also have experience of:

  • Working on research projects
  • Grading of tissue sections

You will also need expertise in:

  • Tissue processing (including paraffin embedding and microtome sectioning)
  • Microscopy and imaging techniques
  • Histological and immunohistochemical analysis of tissue samples

Experience of using MicroCT equipment and post-analysis using NRecon and CTan software, and expertise in bone physiology or endocrinology would be advantageous, but aren't essential.
