Vice-President (Research and Development)

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is looking for a dynamic researcher and leader who is able to play a key role in the transformation of the University at a pivotal moment in its history.  Energised by a new 10-year Strategic Plan and with its ambitious Talent100 recruitment initiative fully under way, HKBU is poised to transform itself from an institution with an established regional presence into one with an international reputation for excellence.
The University

Founded in 1956, the University seeks to be a leading research-led liberal arts University in Asia for the world delivering academic excellence in a caring, creative and global culture.  The University has a student population of around 11,000 and a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes up to the PhD level.  Currently the University has an academic and teaching staff strength of about 1,000.  Beyond Hong Kong, the University has a joint campus with Beijing Normal University running a unique liberal arts college in Zhuhai, the United International College.  HKBU also has research centres in other parts of China.

The Role

Reporting to the President and as a core member of the senior management team, the Vice-President (Research and Development) is responsible for the development of the University’s overall research strategy, research budget and funding strategy, research infrastructures and both research and taught postgraduate education.  The role oversees the global recruitment of research and taught postgraduate students; the nurturing of research staff and students; the translation of research results into impactful contributions to the community; the development of knowledge transfer networks; the establishment of global research partnership; and research contract and grant administration.  

The Person

The candidate should be a dynamic researcher and visionary leader who has the vision for global research issues and the ability to enhance the University’s leadership in research, scholarship and creative work, maximising the intellectual power of the University.  He/She should have wide-ranging scholarly interests, understanding of and commitment to promoting the full spectrum of research, interdisciplinary research and engagement, proven academic leadership in instigating changes, extensive knowledge of and proven success in research funding and ability to administer a large research-support enterprise.  Excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills are necessary.
