The University of Manchester Library is one of only five National Research Libraries and the third largest academic library in the UK. Our vast and rich collections (both print and increasingly digital) help us to deliver a world-class library and information service for the University of Manchester. While our primary objective is to meet the learning, teaching and research needs of University members and John Rylands Research Institute staff and fellows, we are also fully committed to widening access to our services to individual researchers, local schools and others in the regional community.

The John Rylands Library, Deansgate, houses some of the most significant books, manuscripts, maps, archives, works of art and heritage objects ever produced. The magnificent neo-gothic building in Manchester's city centre is a major visitor attraction as well as a research library of world renown and home to the John Rylands Research Institute. The collections span four millennia and include exquisite medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing including the Gutenberg Bible, as well as the personal papers of distinguished historical figures including Elizabeth Gaskell, John Dalton and John Wesley.

As a Reader Service Assistant you will be part of a team providing an efficient and effective service to the diverse audiences who access the collections for research and learning. You will contribute to the delivery of a welcoming and informative reception, enquiry and membership service to customers using Special Collections including members of the John Rylands Research Institute.
