The University of Bristol’s Department of Computer Science is seeking to recruit up to two faculty members at the Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Reader level in the field of Cryptography. These positions are similar to (tenured) Assistant/ Associate Professor positions in North America and are on full-time, open-ended contracts.

The University of Bristol is a UK Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research. The successful candidates will be expected to play a major role in strengthening and growing cryptography research and teaching at Bristol.

Our current expertise spans much of cryptography with emphasis on protocol-level security and secure implementations of cryptography (in particular, side-channel resistance, compiler techniques and microarchitectural support). Academics with expertise in any area of cryptography are encouraged to apply, and we are particularly interested in those specialising in

  • Symmetric-key cryptography
  • Post-quantum cryptography
  • High-assurance cryptography

Applicants with expertise that covers more than one of these areas and/or intersects with our existing strengths are also strongly encouraged.

Successful candidates are expected to develop a world-class research program and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level. We are looking for candidates who already attract international recognition and have a strong publication record.

For appointments at Senior Lecturer and Reader positions, candidates should demonstrate their ability to attract research funding from funding agencies and/or industry and have experience of taking an active role in delivering high quality teaching in cryptography or related topics at undergraduate and/or masters-level.

Your application should include your CV (including contact information for two references), a cover letter and two one-page statements:

  • A Research Statement detailing your research plans and their impact on the research profile of the Department; and
  • A Teaching Statement detailing how you intend to contribute to teaching in the Department, especially in respect of innovation in delivery and content.

For informal discussion about the posts you are welcome to contact:
Bogdan Warinschi (Professor of Computer Science, Department of Computer Science, csxbw@bristol.ac.uk) or Seth Bullock (Head of Department, Department of Computer Science, bullock@bristol.ac.uk)

The closing date to apply for this role is 31st January 2018.

Interviews are expected to take place in April 2018.

The University of Bristol is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students. The School particularly welcomes applications from female and BAME candidates.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world’s leading universities.
