About this scholarship

A PhD scholarship is available at the University of South Australia (UniSA) for a collaborative project with a leading Australian medical device manufacturer as well as international partners. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to carry out cutting edge research in an outstanding infrastructural and intellectual environment. The successful candidate will also work closely with the biomedical industry and thus gain valuable insights into the commercial sector.

The successful candidate will join the Intelligent Materials and Devices research group led by Professor Krasimir Vasilev located at the School of Engineering and Future Industry Institute. UniSA’s School of Engineering and Future Industry Institute provide an exciting, vibrant and world-class research and education environment supported by excellent research infrastructure and inter-disciplinary intellectual support.

The strength of our scientists lies in the application of fundamental science to develop knowledge-based technologies that will provide intelligent solutions for tomorrow's high added value industries. Rapid advances in areas such as materials science, nano-biotechnology, biomaterials, sensor technology and advanced computing are leading to new products and processes which are radically revolutionizing the Australian advanced manufacturing industry. Through a multidisciplinary approach, our scientists work on research questions of international significance and address major questions across discipline boundaries.

The Intelligent Materials and Devices research group is actively engaged with several industry partners which offers exclusive industry exposure to its researchers. The group is also involved in a number of partnerships with leading national and international institutions.

The PhD project will focus on understanding the mechanical and tribological properties of novel nanostructured antibacterial surfaces which are currently being translated, together with industry partner, to the surfaces of implantable devices. Thus, the PhD project will create exciting new fundamental science that will be directly involved into solving real life medical and technological challenges.
