The primary purpose of this position is to work as a key member of the research study team with the primary responsibility for oversight of collection, organization, management and reporting of research data for the Persaud HIV Cure laboratory housed in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Pediatrics. The Persaud Laboratory is a subspecialty lab for the NIH-sponsored International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network. The laboratory provides support for clinical trials of interventions aimed at eradicating and controlling HIV reservoirs towards HIV remission and cure.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Use advanced knowledge base to provide oversight for the management of the sample repository, incoming data points, formulate and perform research data analytical methods.
  • Integrate data files into the data management system, update summary files, ensure data quality, development of protocol, and other quality assurance
  • Design and create study specific databases
  • Oversee and collaborate in development of study tools including data collection forms
  • Prepare for and participates in audits of studies internally
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of assigned protocols. Works on research studies which require a high level knowledge, coordination, and data abstraction
  • Assist the principal investigator in defining information and plans required to accomplish goals of studies. Design and create data collection forms as needed.
  • Design database in ACCESS, SAS or other database management system. Implement and maintain database.
  • Focus on data base management and basic programming for analysis of variables in studies. Work closely with research collaborators to process and analyze data, help in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, and help with preparation of presentations.
  • Manage database used for research projects. Ensure integrity, accuracy and security of data
  • Responsible for data quality control based on protocol requirements and research study objectives
  • Conduct basic statistical analysis for studies with various research design
  • Support the design and production of quality tables and graphs for scientific presentations using graphic software
  • Detect problems in research instruments, data collection and data entry
  • Make suggestions or provide solutions to problems related to data management and statistical analyses
  • Help develop grant proposals, project reports and manuscripts for publication

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related discipline. 3 years related experience.  Additional education (Master's level) may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree in public health or closely related field preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to read and comprehend research protocol and advanced data and analytical methods
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid planning and organizational skills, ability to prioritize work independently.
  • Sound working knowledge of databases and statistical software for data analysis.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
