The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester offer’s world-leading programmes across a wide range of subjects. Three of the Schools within the Faculty of Science and Engineering are seeking to appoint a Technical Operations Manager; these are the School of Physics and Astronomy, the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.

The role of the Technical Operations Manager is to manage the staff, facilities and environment to enable the delivery of high-quality technical support which is aligned to the strategic objectives in teaching, research and quality services of the School and to ensure its technical services provision is at the forefront of sector best practice. This will involve providing strategic leadership for, and management of all technical and experimental staff and services within their area of work and ensuring coordination and alignment with technical services across the Faculty and wider University as required.

You will work closely with the academic community and heads of business areas and other colleagues in the delivery of world class teaching and research. The role will require a culture of continuous improvement within the technical and experimental support services and will entail significant change management.

You would be expected to have significant experience of managing and/or working at a senior level in a science and engineering laboratory or technical environment, extensive experience of managing a relevant research laboratory environment (including leadership and line management of technical staff) and the ability to generate new ideas and support change management including experience of supporting and motivating a team through change.
