Professor and Director/Principal Investigator of CLOSER

Full Time : 

The appointment will be on UCL Grade Professorial. 

The salary range will be Professorial Grade, dependent on achievements, qualifications and experience, with minimum salary £70,420 per annum; a competitive salary will be available to exceptional candidates., inclusive of London Allowance.

The Department of Social Science is one of the largest centres of multi-disciplinary, social science research and teaching in London. It is home to over 80 academics based in five renowned research centres, including CLOSER (Cohorts and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources). CLOSER brings together eight world-leading longitudinal studies with participants born throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Its work maximises the use, value and impact of these, and other, longitudinal studies to help improve understanding of key social and biomedical challenges.

CLOSER is recruiting a new Director and Principal Investigator, to take the scientific lead in its direction and to manage the team responsible for its delivery. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape CLOSER’s work in providing vital resources for interdisciplinary longitudinal research, while also pursuing their own research within the field of quantitative longitudinal research.

The Director will provide the leadership required to shape and deliver CLOSER’s core objectives to the highest standards. This will require oversight of a number of different work strands, including activity relating to data harmonisation and linkage, discovery, training, international outreach, and impact. He or she will take the lead in promoting the value of CLOSER’s work, and longitudinal data more widely, to a range of key stakeholders, including those working in academia, government, and research funders. 

The successful candidate will have proven leadership experience indicating suitability for leading a multi-disciplinary programme based in more than one institution.

Proven ability to design, deliver and provide strategic direction for complex large-scale research projects. 

Experience in public speaking and strong communications skills, to promote the value of longitudinal studies to key academic, practitioner and policy stakeholders.

This post represents a key appointment for the UCL Institute of Education. Salary will be at a level appropriate to the international standing of the successful applicant.
