Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE)
ACE is a dynamic and exciting research environment that brings together leading researchers in molecular microbial ecology, evolution and bioinformatics. ACE is located within the School of Chemistry & Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) at the University of Queensland and features modern laboratories with in-house sequencing capacity and high performance computing. The appointee will be working as part of a team on an ARC Laureate Program, entitled Reconstructing the universal tree and network of life led by Professor Phil Hugenholtz. This program leverages the vast number of draft genomes emerging from metagenomic studies, and aims to systematically organise and explore >1,000,000 microbial genomes from uncultured regions of the tree. The appointees primary role will be to aid in the development of the computational infrastructure required to explore the evolutionary and metabolic diversity of these genomes.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor, Master or PhD degree resulting in expertise in one or more of the following areas: bioinformatics, computer science, phylogenetics, or microbial genomics. It is essential that you are proficient with Linux and one or more programming languages, including Python. Applicants must possess a high level of oral communication skills and be comfortable discussing software design issues to team members with varying levels of software development experience.
The position is full-time, fixed term for 12 months at a Professional HEW 5 or 6 level (depending on qualifications & experience), with a possible extension of up to one year.
For HEW 5, the remuneration package will be in the range $66,347-74,098 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $77,626- $86,695 p.a.).
For HEW 6, the remuneration package will be in the range $75,957- $81,714 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $88,869 - $91,974 p.a.).
