You will join the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, which acts, on behalf of the Director General, in matters of safety and the protection of personnel and environment. The Radiation Protection Group protects workers and public against the risks of exposure to ionising radiation, ensuring that exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. The duties of CERN’s Radiation Protection Group include the assessment of radiation hazards of CERN’s activities, including new accelerators and experiments, the definition of protective measures as well as the legally required monitoring of the exposure of radiation workers to ionising radiation and radioactive waste management. The Radioactive Waste Management team, as part of the Radiation Protection Group mainly manages, processes, and performs the disposal of radioactive and mixed waste.
As Radioactive Waste Technician, you will work in the Radioactive Waste Section and implement the process of radioactive waste reception and elimination. You will:
- Receive, sort and process radioactive waste, prior to their storage in CERN’s temporary storage areas or their disposal, using appropriate mechanical and electromechanical tooling.
- Assess the radiological and general safety risks and take the necessary measures to ensure the storage of radioactive waste according to CERN regulations and good practices.
- Elaborate procedures for radioactive waste disposal; write the corresponding technical documents (processing plan, technical instructions, etc.) and ensure their application.
- Carry out technical coordination of contractors in the application of the radiation protection procedures; ensure adherence to general safety measures and working procedures for waste.
- Provide advice to waste producers within CERN on radioactive waste handling, packaging and transport as well as on radiation protection matters linked to this activity.
- Process, evaluate and analyse technical data and write technical and survey reports.
- Keep an updated record of received and disposed waste using the CERN traceability system.
- Handle, measure and analyse sealed and unsealed radioactive substances using spectroscopy measurements.
- Technical certificate in the field of radiation protection or in a related field with relevant experience in radioactive waste management.
- Fork-lift and overhead crane operation certification would be an asset.
The experience required for this post is:
- Proven experience in management and elimination of radioactive waste and/or decommissioning projects.
- Experience in operational radiation protection with knowledge of measurement principles and use of radiation measurement devices (gamma spectrometry, scintillation counting techniques).
- Experience in implementing radiation protection guidance for users.
- Experience in data processing and databases would be an asset (SQL).
- Knowledge of radioactive waste management.
- Knowledge of Radiation Safety.
- Knowledge of regulatory framework and best practice in radiation protection.
- Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Learning and sharing knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer; proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.

- Demonstrating accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises; maintaining confidentiality.
- Spoken and written French or English with the willingness to acquire the other language rapidly.

Contract type: Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.
These functions require:
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
