At the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna the position of a

University Professor of Historical Transregional Studies 

(full time, permanent position) is to be filled.

The professorship is dedicated to the study of historical phenomena in transregional perspective. Candidates from all historical disciplines whose research relates multiple regions to each other are invited to apply. We expect the candidate to engage in particular with theoretical and methodological concepts such as entanglement, transfer, interaction and space.

The professorship is one of three newly established, transdisciplinary professorships at the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies. The aim is to strengthen the common theoretical and methodological foundations of historical and cultural studies in both research and teaching. We expect the candidate to be prepared to conduct courses at the BA, MA and PhD levels; these include, in particular, involvement in the new introductory lecture course “Foundations of Historical-Cultural Thinking” and in interdisciplinary doctoral seminars. Successful candidates will demonstrate relevant teaching experience and research projects in the field. Participation in the existing key research areas of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies is desired, notably “Cultures of the European-Mediterranean Region and Antiquity Studies”, “Historical and Cultural European Studies”, “Austria in its Environment”, “Global History”, “Community, Conflict , Integration” and “Dictatorships – Violence – Genocides” (https://hist-kult.univie.ac.at/institute-forschungsschwerpunkte/forschungsschwerpunkte/).

Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree/PhD and post-doctoral experience at a university or other research Institution
  • Habilitation (venia docendi) in a subject field relevant to this position or an internationally accepted equivalent qualification is desirable
  • Outstanding achievements in research, excellent publication record, international Reputation
  • Experience in designing, procuring and managing large research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research Groups
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience at universities as well as the ability and willingness to teach students in all phases of their studies (bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promoting young academic colleagues

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German, sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees. In addition, the University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to take over responsibility on the organisational level of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies and the University, if necessary.
